The Chief's Ride

July 2005. You're the Chief of Police for the largest police department in Norfolk County. Your undermanned patrol force is driving literal death-trap cruisers, at least the ones that start on any given day. When they won't start, your officers are forced to double-up in one cruiser, drive the equally unsafe prisoner transport wagon on patrol, or simply walk a beat. In the meantime, you're driving a one year-old, fully-loaded, unmarked Crown Victoria, with 13,000 miles on it. Do you;

A) Ask the City Council for an emergency appropriation for new cruisers.
B) Authorize the department mechanics to inspect each vehicle, and make repairs as necessary to make them safe.
C) Authorize the patrol force to drive the low-mileage detective and/or community police vehicles, as needed.
D) Say "screw the patrol force", and buy yourself a $28,000 SUV at city expense.

If you're Chief Robert Crowley, the answer is "D".
